What To Bring
Through the years, we have learned what is essential and what is optional. I have listed the things you should bring for the trip! There are a few items we will purchase in the city before we go - like bed sheets and a pillow so you won't need a sleeping bag or anything like that.
Essentials
Tent
To keep bugs and mosquitos away from where you sleep, a tent is a great idea. You will be sleeping indoors, but nothing in the jungle is truly completely indoors - but you'll have a roof over your head if that helps. We have used mosquito nets in the past as well, but tents work better. This tent worked well for us last year:
Air Mattress
We will sleep on either concrete or wood so you need some sort of air mattress. These worked well for us: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0BS5KH3HT
Travel Pillow
A travel pillow is a handy on the boat. We ordered these for this year:
Wired Headphones
The jungle is constantly making noise. Birds, roosters, monkeys - and farmers who wake up early. Bluetooth headphones likely won't last all night (and you'd have to charge them) so a pair of wired headphones for your phone to play white noise are highly recommended!
Travel Battery
It's good to have a battery to recharge things or to keep your phone juiced up all night playing white noise. Here's a good one:
Rechargeable Fan
We bought these fans last year and they were incredible. I cannot recommend them enough:
Shade Hat
A hat is a really good idea. We're going to be working close to the equator, so the sun is overhead and it can get hot during the afternoons. A ball cap will do, but something that covers your neck as well might be preferred by some.
Footwear
You'll want sandals for the shower, tennis shoes for the job site and for playing soccer and volleyball
First Aid Items
We usually have a community kit, but if you want specific items, it doesn't hurt to have your own stash.
Handy Apps
White noise, journal, Google Translate (or similar), Duolingo (or similar for Spanish tutoring)
Flashlights
Headlamp style are the preferred way to go, but a handheld one is always good.
